You've been busy researching the plethora of MLM companies offering home based business opportunities to find one that is a fit for you. And now you're sponsor shopping.

Sponsor shopping, in MLM, is the process of researching and interviewing potential sponsors to find one that is a fit for you and your potential MLM business.

This blog entry and the next several entries will focus on tips and questions to ask as you go through the process of sponsor shopping.

Sponsor shopping tip #1--Use the Internet
The internet is a great resource to use as you sponsor shop. Many distributors from various MLM companies use online methods to build their business. This includes the development of a website to allow you to get to know them better as an individual, a business person, and a potential sponsor.

Take time to go through these websites and get a feel for the person behind each website. Learn what motivated the individual to start a home based business, how they view their business, and what methods they use to grow their business. This will give you a feel for a person as a potential sponsor and help you see if this person is going to be a good fit for you as you start and grow your MLM business.

In my next blog, I'll talk about the next step in the sponsor shopping process.

I belong to a couple of online 'work from home' forums and frequently people say, "I want to work at home, but how do I get started?"

My question to them is do you want a job that you can work at home or do you want a business that you can work from home because there is a difference. This is what I tell those interested in earning money with a home based MLM business.

There are a plethora of MLM companies out there with every service and product under the sun offering a home based business opportunity. If this is the route you choose to earn money from home, here are some things to consider as you get started.

First and foremost, choose a company that you believe in with products that you believe in. Are the products something you would use even if you were not promoting them? Without a belief in the product, you will not be excited to share it with hours.

Once you choose a company and a product that you feel you can believe, now it's time to do a bit more research on the company. Some things to consider--
  • Is the company well established? Has it been in business for at least 5 years? Many network marketing companies fail within the first few years of getting started.

  • Who are the leaders in the company? Do they have network marketing experience?

  • What is the compensation plan? Will it allow you to earn money based on how you want to work the business?

  • What is the financial state of the company? Is it debt free? Be careful of any companies that owe a lot of money.

  • What is the cost of entry and the cost of the monthly auto-ship? Is it one the average person can afford? Anything that is too expensive will be unappealing to others who also want to earn money through a home based business, especially in today's economy.

  • Are the products consumable? Is it something that people will buy, use, and return with repeat orders? Or is it a one time purchase?

  • Are the products affordable? Is it something the average consumer can afford to buy?

Starting a home based business is a big decision. You are investing your time and your money so don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions as you research the different MLM companies available so you can find one that is the right fit for you!
